Cristiano Ronaldo will be eligible to play for Portugal in their opening match at next summer's World Cup despite receiving a red card in their recent qualifying game against the Republic of Ireland.

The 40-year-old forward was sent off after elbowing Dara O'Shea in the back during Portugal's 2-0 defeat earlier this month. Violent conduct usually carries a three-match ban. However, Ronaldo's second and third matches of the suspension have been postponed for one year.

BBC Sport reports that FIFA considered the fact that this was Ronaldo's first red card in 226 international appearances when deciding to suspend the additional matches. As a result, Ronaldo served only one match of the ban, sitting out Portugal's game against Armenia on 16 November, and will be able to participate fully in the World Cup matches in the United States next summer.

FIFA issued a statement explaining that if Ronaldo commits another offense of a similar nature and severity during the probationary period, the suspension will be immediately enforced, and the remaining two matches must be served. This measure ensures that any future incident of violent conduct will be treated seriously while giving Ronaldo a chance to compete in the tournament.

Ronaldo played a key role in Portugal's successful qualifying campaign, scoring five goals as the team topped Group F. With this victory, Portugal has qualified for their seventh consecutive World Cup.

The full tournament draw will take place on Friday, 5 December, and will be broadcast live on the BBC. A total of 48 teams will learn which group they have been placed in for the competition. The draw sets the stage for the opening fixtures and outlines the path each team must take to reach the later rounds of the tournament.

Portugal's squad, including Ronaldo, will now focus on preparations for the World Cup, with the striker expected to lead the team in their opening match. His availability brings reassurance to fans and teammates alike, as Portugal aims to continue its strong record at the global tournament.

Ronaldo's return to the pitch for the World Cup opener marks a notable moment in his international career. Despite his age and the disciplinary incident, he remains a central figure for Portugal and is expected to make a significant impact during the tournament.
