A year after the tragic death of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, a legal dispute involving his family has emerged, placing questions about his estate, trust and premarital agreement before the courts. Warner's widow, Tenisha Warner, has filed a lawsuit seeking approximately $1.2 million from Pamela Warner, the actor's mother and the trustee of the Warner Family Trust.
According to court documents filed in July, Tenisha alleges that several commitments outlined in a premarital agreement signed before her 2017 marriage to the late actor were never fulfilled. Among the most significant claims is the allegation that Warner failed to purchase or maintain a life insurance policy naming her as the sole beneficiary, despite agreeing to do so before their wedding.
Tenisha also claims that Warner did not meet several financial obligations contained in the agreement. These allegedly included paying her a monthly salary for serving as his chief of staff, funding a Roth Individual Retirement Account on her behalf and providing a tax-free annual payment of $16,000 on each wedding anniversary.
The dispute extends beyond the premarital agreement to the management of the Warner Family Trust. Tenisha contends that she and the couple's nine-year-old daughter, MacKenzie, currently have no access to trust assets. She alleges that Pamela Warner intends to retain those assets in a manner that disadvantages both the widow and the child.
Court filings further claim that Pamela Warner used her authority as trustee to sell the family's former Studio City, California home despite objections from Tenisha. The lawsuit alleges that the property was listed and sold without sufficient notice to the family and against efforts to preserve it.
Tenisha has asked the court to recover what she considers unpaid obligations under the premarital agreement. She is also seeking legal fees and a court order preventing the distribution of trust assets while the case remains unresolved.
In a public statement, Tenisha said Malcolm-Jamal Warner had intended to update his estate plans before his death. She explained that the existing trust structure had been established decades before their relationship began and long before the birth of their daughter.
Warner, best known for his role on The Cosby Show, died in July 2025 after drowning while on vacation in Costa Rica. His death shocked fans around the world. Now, as legal proceedings unfold, the dispute has introduced a new chapter in the legacy of a beloved actor whose family remains divided over questions of inheritance and financial responsibility.
