Luka Modric will remain at AC Milan after signing a one year contract extension, keeping the veteran midfielder at the club beyond his initial spell in Italy.
The Croatia captain arrived at the San Siro last summer on a one year deal after bringing his glittering 13 year career at Real Madrid to an end. His original agreement included an option for an additional season, which Milan have now activated following his first campaign with the club.
Modric, who will celebrate his 41st birthday in September, made 37 appearances for the Rossoneri during the 2025/26 season, scoring two goals. It was a difficult year for Milan, who finished fifth in Serie A and were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia, falling short of their ambitions.
Despite the disappointing campaign, the experienced midfielder is eager to help the club challenge for greater success next season.
"I am thrilled to stay at AC Milan, where you made me feel welcomed and loved from the very first day," Modric said after extending his contract.
He added that the team is determined to respond after failing to meet expectations last season.
"After a season below our expectations, the desire to bounce back is immense. A new season and a new challenge await us, a project I believe in and that motivates me.
"I'm ready to continue to give everything again for this shirt and I'm so proud to keep wearing these colours. Can't wait to return to San Siro and feel your roar."
Modric recently represented Croatia at his fifth FIFA World Cup, where his side were eliminated by Portugal in the last 32. Since becoming Croatia captain in 2016, he has also led his country to a runners up finish and a third place finish at previous World Cups.
The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in European football, winning six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns during his time at Real Madrid. Before moving to Spain, he spent four seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, making 160 appearances.
Modric will now work under new Milan manager Ruben Amorim, who took charge in June following the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri. The club praised Modric's influence, highlighting his leadership, quality, humility and passion, while expressing confidence that he will continue to play an important role as Milan pursue further success.
