Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised for publicly criticising the club's leadership following a disappointing Champions League defeat, bringing an immediate controversy to a close while leaving questions about his future at Old Trafford.
The Argentina international made the remarks after United lost to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Martinez expressed frustration with the squad's strength, suggesting that head coach Michael Carrick had been left without sufficient resources and calling for greater investment from the club's hierarchy.
He also directed criticism towards technical director Jason Wilcox, comments that placed the defender at the centre of an increasingly uncomfortable debate about United's direction.
Following discussions with club officials and Carrick on Thursday, Martinez issued a statement acknowledging that his reaction had been inappropriate.
He explained that the conversation with the club's leadership had been positive and had allowed those involved to exchange views openly about the incident. Martinez said his passion for football and frustration over the defeat had influenced his comments, adding that he regretted expressing his feelings at the wrong time and in the wrong setting.
The defender also emphasised the importance of unity, saying his words had not helped the club work towards its shared ambitions. He maintained that he believed in his teammates, the manager and everyone working to improve the team's fortunes.
It is understood that Martinez has been formally disciplined with a fine for his outburst. Although the club considers the matter addressed, uncertainty remains over whether he will feature in Sunday's Premier League meeting with Leeds United at Elland Road.
The controversy comes during a difficult period for United. Carrick's side have recorded only two wins from nine matches this season and sit 13th in the league, with six points from six games. The upcoming fixture against Leeds therefore presents an important opportunity to improve results and ease pressure surrounding the team.
Former United captain Roy Keane has also criticised the wider situation at his old club, describing it as resembling a circus during an appearance on The Overlap podcast.
Beyond the immediate disciplinary issue, Martinez's long term future remains uncertain. His current contract expires at the end of the season, although United have an option to extend it by another year. The club has yet to decide whether to exercise that option.
For now, Martinez has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to collective success. Whether his apology helps restore trust within the club may become clearer as United attempt to rebuild momentum on the pitch.
