Chelsea are exploring the possibility of signing England international John Stones after the experienced defender became a free agent following the end of his Manchester City contract.
The 32-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs, with Chelsea and Inter Milan both monitoring his situation ahead of the new season. Having left City at the end of June, Stones is available without a transfer fee, making him an appealing option for clubs seeking experience and quality at the back.
The Blues are actively strengthening their defensive options this summer and have identified several potential targets. Alongside their interest in Stones, Chelsea remain in discussions over a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. The club is also evaluating other defensive reinforcements, including Como defender Jacobo Ramon, as it looks to reshape its backline before the transfer window closes.
To accommodate any new arrivals, Chelsea are also expected to trim their squad by moving on several defenders. England international Trevoh Chalobah is currently in negotiations over a switch to Serie A side Como, while Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are among the players the club is willing to sell if suitable offers arrive.
Stones would bring a wealth of top-level experience to Stamford Bridge should a deal materialise. Since joining Manchester City from Everton in 2016 for a reported £47.5 million, he established himself as one of the Premier League's most accomplished central defenders and played a key role during the club's most successful period.
During his eight-year spell at the Etihad Stadium, Stones made 295 appearances in all competitions and helped City secure an impressive collection of major honours. His trophy haul includes six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League crown, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
On the international stage, Stones has also been a consistent figure for England. The former Barnsley academy graduate has earned 93 senior caps and has featured in several major tournaments. Most recently, he was part of the England squad that finished third at the FIFA World Cup, further underlining his importance to the national team.
While Chelsea continue to assess multiple defensive targets, Stones' availability on a free transfer presents an attractive opportunity. His experience, leadership and proven record at both club and international level could make him a valuable addition as the Blues continue rebuilding their squad for the upcoming campaign.
