Taylor Townsend's second-round win at the US Open came with more heat off the court than on it. The 29-year-old American defeated Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 on Wednesday, but a fiery confrontation followed at the net.

According to The Athletic, Ostapenko demanded an apology after Townsend's shot clipped the net cord and landed in play. Townsend refused, telling her opponent she didn't have to say sorry. Crowd boos drowned out the exchange, but cameras captured Ostapenko pointing and repeating, "You have no education," while Townsend appeared to reply, "Take the loss."

The tension carried into post-match comments. Townsend told ESPN that "people get upset when they lose. Some say bad things." She added, "I beat her in Canada, I beat her in New York. If I show respect to you, I expect respect as well."

Ostapenko later accused Townsend of "disrespectful behavior," citing both the net cord incident and her warm-up at the net instead of the baseline. Posting on Instagram, she wrote, "If she plays in her homeland it doesn't mean she can behave and do whatever she wants."

Townsend dismissed those complaints, saying her net warm-ups are long-standing practice. "Everyone knows this is something I do," she said. "It wasn't targeted at her."

When asked if she believed Ostapenko's remarks had racial undertones, Townsend declined to speculate. Ostapenko, however, addressed online criticism in a follow-up post, denying racism: "I was NEVER racist in my life. I respect all nations of people."

Despite the drama, Townsend focused on her progress. "The thing I'm most proud of is I let my racket talk," she told reporters. "She's packed up and gone. I'm here, moving forward."

The win sends Townsend to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2023, where she will face 18-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva.

At the end of the day, Townsend's words summed it best: "It's competition. No matter what happens, we have to respect each other. But you're not going to insult me."
