A devastating helicopter crash in northern Kenya has claimed the lives of seven people, including prominent American businessman Roger Duarte and respected media executive José Alberto Suárez. The tragedy occurred on August 19 when a helicopter carrying six tourists and a Kenyan pilot went down in a remote and rugged region of Samburu County, sending shockwaves through both the international business and media communities.
According to local authorities and the United States State Department, the helicopter was traveling from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area when it crashed in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, with officials yet to determine what led to the fatal incident.
Recovery operations proved difficult due to the challenging terrain and an active fire at the crash site. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that emergency response teams were deployed as part of a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies. However, rescuers faced significant obstacles in reaching the wreckage, delaying recovery efforts in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
Among the victims was Roger Duarte, a successful entrepreneur who earned national recognition after founding George Stone Crab, a company specializing in the international delivery of stone crabs from the Florida Keys. Duarte began his career in investment banking before launching the business at the age of 24. His entrepreneurial success earned him a place on Forbes' prestigious 30 Under 30 list in 2012. He is survived by his wife, Nicole Valls Duarte, and their two sons.
His father, Roger Duarte Sr., expressed profound grief following confirmation of his son's death. Speaking shortly after the tragedy, he said the family was devastated and still searching for answers as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The accident also claimed the life of José Alberto Suárez, a highly respected figure in the broadcasting industry. Suárez served as president and general manager of Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49, and Telemundo Ft. Myers–Naples. With more than 25 years of experience in media, he was widely admired for his leadership and dedication to serving local communities.
In a joint statement, NBCUniversal executives described Suárez as an exceptional colleague whose warmth, humor, and sense of purpose left a lasting impact on everyone who worked with him. They praised his commitment to journalism and community service, noting that his influence extended far beyond the television stations he led.
As investigations continue, families, friends, and colleagues of the victims are mourning an immense loss. The tragedy has highlighted both the dangers of aviation in remote regions and the profound human cost of such unforeseen disasters.
