Ellen DeGeneres is celebrating 18 years of marriage to Portia de Rossi, marking nearly two decades together with a heartfelt tribute to her wife.

The former talk show host, 68, married de Rossi, 53, in 2008 after the couple began dating in late 2004. On Sunday, Aug. 16, DeGeneres celebrated their wedding anniversary with a sweet message shared on Instagram.

"Happy anniversary to my favorite person in the entire world," she wrote. "I can't believe how lucky I am that I get to spend the rest of my life with you. What an adventure we are having!!"

Alongside the message, DeGeneres shared a photo of the couple sitting together on a sunlit wooden step outdoors. In the picture, she rests her head on de Rossi's shoulder while wrapping an arm around her. Both women smile at the camera while wearing sunglasses and casual outfits.

The couple appeared to be traveling in Africa at the time. Just days before the anniversary post, DeGeneres had shared photos and videos from what appeared to be Botswana or Rwanda.

Celebrity friends also joined in celebrating the couple's milestone. Kris Jenner left a message in the comments, writing, "Happy Anniversary beautiful friends we love you!!!!"

DeGeneres had already marked the milestone earlier this summer during Pride Month. On June 24, she shared the cover of PEOPLE's Sept. 1, 2008 issue, which featured the couple smiling together on their wedding day.

"Being married is the greatest joy of my life. It has been for 18 years," DeGeneres wrote at the time. "Happy Pride."

DeGeneres and de Rossi exchanged vows at their California home in an intimate ceremony attended by just 19 guests. They both wore custom white outfits designed by Zac Posen. The celebration included a surprise acoustic performance by musician Joshua Radin, an all-vegan dinner and a vegan red velvet wedding cake.

In 2016, DeGeneres opened up about the relationship and said one of the keys to their lasting marriage was appreciating what they have rather than taking it for granted.

"Portia and I constantly say to each other, 'We are so lucky,'" she told PEOPLE.

DeGeneres also said she had reached a point in her life where she felt secure and settled in their relationship. Reflecting on love, she added that people often receive what they give and encouraged anyone experiencing persistent negativity in a relationship to consider whether it is the right situation for them.
