US President Donald Trump has said he may sue comedian Trevor Noah after a joke linking him to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was made during the Awards broadcast.
While presenting Song of the Year, Noah quipped that the trophy was something artists wanted almost as much as Trump wanted Greenland, adding that Epstein's island was no longer available and that Trump would need a new place to socialise with Bill Clinton.
Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein socially years ago but has repeatedly denied any involvement in Epstein's crimes. He says their relationship ended around 2004 and that he never visited Epstein's private Caribbean island. US justice department statements have previously described allegations against Trump as unfounded.
Clinton has also denied wrongdoing. A spokesperson for the former president said in 2020 that Clinton had never been to Epstein's island, Little St James, and he has not been accused of any crime connected to Epstein.
Responding online, Trump said Noah's remarks were false and defamatory and accused the comedian of spreading incorrect information. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he had never been to Epstein's island and claimed he had never previously been accused of visiting it.
He added that Noah should "get his facts straight" and warned that legal action could follow, saying he was ready to have "some fun" with the comedian.
Epstein died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, years after an earlier conviction for soliciting a minor. Multiple survivors have alleged they were abused on his private island, which he bought in the late 1990s.
Trump has frequently clashed with media organisations and public figures, launching lawsuits or threats of legal action against outlets including major US newspapers in recent years.
