Amazon is officially moving forward with a new Stargate television series, marking a major return for one of science fiction’s most enduring properties. Variety has confirmed that the project comes from Martin Gero, the creator of Blindspot, who began his career inside the original Stargate franchise. The new series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and released on Prime Video.
Exact plot details are being kept secret, but the creative team behind the project gives fans plenty to look forward to. Gero said that twenty years ago his first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate Atlantis. He spent five years working across multiple Stargate series and credits the franchise for teaching him everything about making television. He called the franchise part of his DNA and said he is thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has asked him to guide Stargate into its next phase. He also thanked long time fans who kept the series alive through conventions and rewatches and promised something extraordinary for newcomers.
Gero will write the series and serve as both executive producer and showrunner. He is joined by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Devlin and Emmerich wrote the original Stargate film which Emmerich directed. Their involvement signals a creative bridge between the beginning of the franchise and its new era. Long time Stargate leaders Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will serve as consulting producers, adding even more familiar voices to the project.
Nick Pepper, Head of United States SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, described Stargate as an iconic franchise that has inspired audiences for decades. He said the goal of the new series is to honor its legacy while also pushing it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.
The Stargate universe began with the 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. Its success launched Stargate SG1 which ran for ten seasons and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. The franchise expanded even further with Stargate Atlantis which ran for five seasons beginning in 2004 and later with additional shows and direct to video films. The most recent project was Stargate Origins in 2018.
The announcement of this new series marks the first major step for the franchise since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022. Casting and story details have yet to be revealed but the creative team suggests a strong blend of legacy and new ideas. Fans who have waited years for a fresh chapter now have confirmation that Stargate is officially coming back.
