The eighth season of Love Island USA featured a novel surprise in the dying moments of its opening episode: throuples. Here's how things went down.

About 24 hours into their Love Island experience, the pairs were asked if they wanted to stay committed to their current couple or pursue other opportunities. For those who wanted to leave—Beatriz, Trinity, Bryce, and Zach—new surprises were introduced to knock them off their feet.

And, indeed, newcomer Gabriel took Beatriz and Trinity to a secluded retreat for the evening, while Kayda escorted Bryce and Zach away from the property.

The two groups of three spent the evening together away from the rest of the Islanders, investigating these new possible connections (and, yes, sleeping in one XL bed together), while Kenzie and Sean remained single at the villa.

For Sean, Beatriz's departure was "honestly surprising," telling host Ariana Madix, "I feel like we had good chemistry, good conversation, and everything seemed to be going well."

"Yeah, damn, that just kinda sucks," he said, "because I was actually excited for this one."

Kenzie, on the other hand, was less astonished because she could tell Zach wasn't matching her enthusiasm level. She did, however, confirm, "It's fine." "There will be someone better."

While the evening of throuplehood added a new twist to Love Island, the trios were not meant to endure. While Gabriel and Kayda spent the day getting to know their two dates, they were each required to make a decision about who they wanted to date before stepping inside the villa.

Kayda selected Zach at the infamous firepit, while Gabriel chose Beatriz, allowing Trinity and Bryce to rekindle their romance. Kenzie and Sean remained unmarried and vulnerable.
