Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night program was indefinitely suspended by ABC after remarks he made during his opening monologue earlier this week, about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. His comments quickly drew backlash from viewers, affiliates and regulators, ultimately leading to the network’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air.

In his monologue, Kimmel suggested that conservatives were attempting to distance themselves from the alleged shooter while simultaneously using the tragedy for political gain. He said, “The MAGA gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

He went on to criticize the way some responded publicly to Kirk’s death, suggesting that one reaction in particular was immature and insincere. He remarked, “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

The comments sparked strong criticism almost immediately. Some ABC affiliates called the remarks offensive and insensitive, noting that they came at a time when Kirk’s family and supporters were still grappling with grief. The Federal Communications Commission chair also weighed in, saying the monologue misrepresented the facts and failed to meet the standards expected of broadcasters.

ABC later announced the suspension of the program, describing it as an indefinite measure while the situation was reviewed. The decision was reinforced by pressure from affiliate groups that expressed concern over airing the show in the days following the assassination. The suspension marked one of the most significant controversies of Kimmel’s career, igniting a larger debate over the balance between satire, free expression and sensitivity during national tragedies.

For now, Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains suspended with no timeline for a return, as ABC continues to evaluate the fallout from a monologue that has placed late-night television at the center of a national controversy.
