Rob "Boston Rob" Mariano, the iconic five-time Survivor contestant and fan favorite, has officially stepped back from the game that helped make him a household name. As the cast for the highly anticipated Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans was announced, longtime viewers noticed one major absence—Mariano's—and he has confirmed that the omission was no accident.

"I'm kind of just hanging out," Mariano told People, explaining his decision to skip the milestone season. "I don't have a desire to go back and compete in that realm right now." With his children on summer break, the 49-year-old family man is prioritizing time at home over hidden immunity idols and tribal councils.

Mariano's reality résumé is impressive, spanning over two decades with numerous appearances on Survivor and The Traitors, as well as his most recent stint on Deal or No Deal Island. Alongside his wife and fellow Survivor winner Amber Mariano, he's built a unique legacy, both on screen and off. Together, they're raising four daughters—Lucia, Carina, Isabetta, and Adelina—who now have their dad full-time for the summer.

While his decision seems final for now, Boston Rob didn't completely shut the door on future returns. "You never know what's going to happen," he said, acknowledging how much the series has shaped his life. Still, he made it clear that if he were to return, it would require a significant change in the format. "I don't feel any desire to go back there and play the game again... especially where they're just gonna use me for a little bit and vote me out."

Despite his absence, Mariano's legacy looms large over Survivor 50, a season designed to celebrate the fans and the legends. His impact on the game is undeniable, and while he may be taking a breather, his name will undoubtedly echo in tribal councils and strategy sessions for years to come.

For now, Boston Rob is enjoying life beyond the island—but with a character as beloved and competitive as him, fans know better than to count him out for good.
