What people eat has long been considered central to maintaining good health, but growing scientific evidence suggests that when they eat may be nearly as important. Researchers studying chrononutrition are increasingly examining how meal timing interacts with the body's internal clock and influences metabolism, appetite and long term health.
The human body follows a circadian rhythm that regulates numerous biological processes. According to researchers, this internal clock also affects the way food is processed throughout the day. As a result, eating large meals late at night may produce different metabolic effects from consuming the same food earlier.
Research from Spain has provided some of the strongest evidence for the importance of meal timing. Marta Garaulet of the University of Murcia became interested in the issue after observing that two people following the same weight loss programme experienced different results. The key difference was the timing of their lunch.
A larger study involving 420 adults found that participants who ate lunch earlier lost more weight and did so more quickly than those who ate later. Other research has found that consuming food later may interfere with blood sugar regulation and carbohydrate metabolism.
Scientists believe the difference is partly connected to hormones. As evening approaches, melatonin levels rise as the body prepares for sleep. Research indicates that consuming food when melatonin is elevated may reduce the body's ability to process glucose effectively.
In one study involving more than 800 adults, participants processed a glucose drink less efficiently when they consumed it close to bedtime compared with several hours earlier. Higher blood sugar levels and reduced insulin production were observed when the drink was taken nearer to sleep.
Later eating may also affect appetite. Studies have suggested that eating late can reduce levels of leptin, a hormone involved in signalling fullness, potentially leaving people hungrier the following day. Meal timing may also influence how the body stores and uses fat.
Earlier eating has been associated with possible cardiovascular benefits as well. Research involving more than 100,000 people in France found that later breakfast consumption was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers have also linked longer overnight fasting achieved through earlier evening meals with better heart health.
However, there is no universal dinner time suitable for everyone. Individual schedules and chronotypes, whether someone naturally functions better in the morning or evening, can influence eating habits.
Experts generally recommend maintaining regular meal times, consuming larger meals earlier in the day and choosing lighter evening meals. Eating dinner at least three hours before bedtime may also help align eating patterns with the body's natural rhythm.
The emerging research does not suggest that food choices are unimportant. Rather, it adds another consideration to healthy eating: the clock may matter too.
