The long running medical drama Greys Anatomy has officially been renewed for its twenty third season on ABC, continuing its legacy as one of the most successful and enduring television series in history. Originally created by Shonda Rhimes, the show first premiered in 2005 and has since become a defining force in primetime television.
With this renewal, Greys Anatomy further cements its position as the longest running primetime medical drama. Even after more than two decades on air, the series continues to draw a strong audience. In 2025, it ranked as the number one most streamed series across Disney Plus and Hulu, while Nielsen reported it as the second most streamed series in the United States across all platforms. These achievements highlight the show’s lasting popularity and its ability to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape.
The series stars Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, a character who served as the central figure for much of the show’s run. Although Pompeo stepped back from a full time on screen role during season nineteen, she continues to play an important part in the series. She remains the narrator, makes guest appearances, and also serves as an executive producer. Her continued involvement ensures that the character of Meredith Grey remains a guiding presence within the story.
Over the years, Greys Anatomy has seen many cast members come and go, reflecting the evolving nature of the show. The current lineup includes Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr as Richard Webber, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, Jason George as Ben Warren, Chris Carmack as Atticus Lincoln, Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu, Alexis Floyd as Simone Griffith, Harry Shum Jr as Benson Kwan, Adelaide Kane as Jules Millin, Midori Francis as Mika Yasuda, Niko Terho as Lucas Adams, and Trevor Jackson as Wes Bryant. This blend of longtime characters and newer additions continues to bring fresh energy to the series.
At the same time, the show is preparing to say goodbye to some familiar faces. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are set to exit their roles as Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman following the upcoming season twenty two finale. Their departures mark another significant transition as the series moves forward.
The renewal also places Greys Anatomy within ABC’s 2026 to 2027 lineup, alongside other popular shows such as season ten of 9 1 1, season two of 9 1 1 Nashville, season six of Abbott Elementary, and season three of High Potential. This strong lineup reflects the network’s continued confidence in established hits while also supporting newer programming.
As it heads into its twenty third season, Greys Anatomy shows no signs of slowing down. Its continued success speaks to its ability to evolve with time while maintaining the emotional storytelling and character driven drama that first captured audiences. With a loyal fan base and a proven track record, the series remains a cornerstone of modern television.
