Fans who have been missing familiar faces from The Rookie may have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming season. As anticipation builds for the season 8 premiere airing Tuesday, Jan. 6, cast members Deric Augustine and Lisseth Chavez are offering intriguing hints about what viewers can expect.

In a conversation with PEOPLE, Augustine, who plays Officer Miles Penn, teased that a significant return is on the horizon. According to the 35 year old actor, one episode will bring back a character from the past, opening the door to unresolved history and emotional tension. He shared that audiences will get a deeper look at the true dynamic between the characters involved, including the experiences that shaped them individually. Augustine described the scenes as powerful and emotionally rich, adding that the moment is such a major spoiler he cannot reveal more, though he believes viewers will appreciate the depth of the performances.

Chavez, 36, who portrays Officer Celina Juarez, also hinted at exciting developments this season, particularly through standout guest appearances. She noted that several fun and memorable guest stars join the show, with one storyline standing out for its connection to Celina's character. Chavez teased that the episode involves the Secret Service and themes of reincarnation, saying that when she read the script, it immediately felt tailor made for Celina. Having joined the series in season 7 as a recurring character before becoming a series regular, Chavez expressed enthusiasm about the direction of her storyline.

Series creator Alexi Hawley confirmed that longtime fans can expect to see more familiar faces throughout season 8. He shared that iconic villains will return, including defense attorney Monica Stevens, played by Bridget Regan. Monica appears in the premiere episode, which takes the team to Prague as the LAPD works alongside the FBI and Interpol to pursue high value terrorists. Hawley also revealed that Oscar Hutchinson, the career criminal portrayed by Matthew Glave, will make another appearance following his prison escape in the season 7 finale. He added that the team hopes to welcome back Flula Borg and remains eager to work again with Pete Davidson, pending his busy schedule.

Hawley explained that one of the rewards of running a long standing series is that actors genuinely want to return, making it easier to bring back beloved characters.

The Rookie follows John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, a divorced man in his forties who joins the Los Angeles Police Department as its oldest rookie. The ensemble cast also includes Jenna Dewan, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Shawn Ashmore, Augustine, and Chavez.

Season 8 of The Rookie premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available to stream on Hulu the following day.
