Jimmy Kimmel Live! Is set to return to ABC after a brief but highly publicized suspension following controversial remarks made by Kimmel during a recent monologue. The late-night host drew backlash after referencing the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, sparking outrage from political figures, media affiliates and parts of the viewing public.

In the monologue, Kimmel accused members of the MAGA movement of attempting to politicize Kirk’s death. He said the “MAGA gang” was trying to portray the tragedy in a distorted light to gain sympathy or political advantage. His remarks were viewed by critics as inflammatory and disrespectful, especially so soon after the incident involving Kirk.

The fallout was immediate. Major station groups, including Nexstar and Sinclair—both of which operate dozens of ABC-affiliated stations across the country—opted to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live! From their schedules. They described Kimmel’s comments as “insensitive” and “ill-timed,” and called for accountability from the network.

Things escalated further when FCC Chairman Brendan Carr weighed in, suggesting that broadcasters have a responsibility to serve the public interest. Carr hinted that Kimmel’s commentary may have crossed a line, prompting concerns about regulatory scrutiny for ABC and its affiliates.

ABC responded swiftly by announcing an indefinite suspension of the show. In a statement, the network said the decision was made in order to “deescalate tensions” and give space for reflection. The move sparked mixed reactions, some applauded the network’s stance, while others criticized it as a blow to free speech and comedic expression.

After nearly a week of behind-the-scenes discussions, ABC confirmed that Jimmy Kimmel Live! Would return to its regular time slot the following Tuesday. Network executives said the decision came after “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel and reaffirmed that the initial suspension was not intended to be permanent.

While ABC is moving forward with the show’s return, it remains to be seen whether all affiliates, particularly those that pulled the program, will reinstate it on their local schedules. Kimmel has not yet commented publicly on the show’s return or whether he plans to address the controversy on-air.
