Ed Sheeran is opening up about a common secret in the music industry. During a recent appearance on the Beta Squad YouTube channel, the "Sapphire" singer joined a game where he had to guess which of six contestants was a real professional vocalist. In the process, Sheeran shared some revealing thoughts about lip-syncing among his fellow artists.
One contestant admitted she might lip-sync if her voice was not in top shape. In response, Sheeran said, "I don't know if a professional singer would admit to miming."
When a Beta Squad member questioned that, saying, "I thought a lot of professional artists do that though?" Sheeran replied, "They don't admit to it though."
He was then asked if he had ever lip-synced during a performance. Sheeran said no and explained that he couldn't get away with it since his shows involve just him, a loop pedal, and his guitar.
"But I would never cancel a show for my voice," he added. "I'd always push through, even if it was slightly raspy."
Sheeran went on to clarify his point. "I feel like if you are a professional singer, even if you do mime — because there are professional singers that mime — they would never admit that they mime."
Currently, Sheeran is performing on the European leg of his +−=÷× Tour, which began in 2022. His next stop is scheduled for August 7 at Middenvijver Park in Antwerp, Belgium.
In addition to touring, Sheeran is preparing for the release of his eighth studio album, titled Play, which drops on September 12. The project includes songs like "Azizam," "Old Phone," "Sapphire," and "A Little More," which comes out on August 7.
The father of two daughters, Lyra, 4, and Jupiter, 3, whom he shares with wife Cherry Seaborn, recently talked about their favorite song of his during an appearance on the Not Gonna Lie podcast with Kylie Kelce.
"Sapphire. And Sapphire from the beginning," he shared. "They came to India when I made that record. They were in the studio while we were putting all the tablas and santoors. They were watching it all happen."
"They know most of the lyrics to that song now," Sheeran added proudly.
