Singer-songwriter James Taylor has revealed that although he received an invitation to the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, he decided not to attend the star-studded celebration.

Speaking during his annual Independence Day weekend concert with his All-Star Band at the Koussevitzky Music Shed in Tanglewood, Massachusetts, the 78-year-old musician told the audience that he and his wife, Kim, had been invited to the ceremony, which took place at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

"You know, Kim and I were invited to a wedding at Madison Square Garden tonight," Taylor told concertgoers, according to The Berkshire Eagle.

Although he skipped the event, Taylor offered his best wishes to the newlyweds, saying he hoped they would enjoy "happiness and smooth sailing" as they began married life together.

Taylor and Swift share a long-standing personal connection. The Grammy-winning pop star has previously revealed that she was named after the legendary folk musician. Reflecting on their first meeting during a 2024 interview with USA Today, Taylor recalled crossing paths with Swift roughly 15 or 16 years ago at a charity event hosted by the Candie's Foundation, an organization focused on preventing teenage pregnancy.

He remembered that both artists performed with guitars during the benefit concert. Taylor appeared alongside his wife and accompanying musicians, while Swift performed solo.

At the time, Swift was still in her teens. Taylor recalled that she told him she had grown up listening to his music and that her parents chose her name in tribute to him.

Swift later referenced Taylor in "Begin Again," the closing track on her 2012 album Red, further highlighting the mutual respect between the two musicians.

Swift and Kelce exchanged vows on Friday, July 3, during a lavish ceremony at Madison Square Garden attended by approximately 1,000 guests. Actor Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, while celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone and Paul Rudd were among those spotted at the event. A rehearsal dinner was held the previous evening, with close friends including Lena Dunham, Jack Antonoff and Abigail Anderson in attendance.

The couple announced their engagement in August 2025 through a joint Instagram post featuring photos from Kelce's garden proposal. Swift captioned the announcement with the playful message, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.
