Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, one of the most celebrated directors in contemporary cinema, is preparing for his first-ever Oscar campaign with his Cannes Palme d’Or-winning film It Was Just an Accident. Long recognized as a dissident voice and a master of world cinema — with top prizes from Cannes, Berlin, and Venice — Panahi has never been in contention for an Academy Award. The reason is simple: Iran has consistently refused to submit his films for consideration.

After a week of filming across Rhode Island’s capital, J.J. Abrams called “wrap” on the Providence portion of his latest project, Ghostwriter, in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 25, 2025. The final stretch of filming unfolded on the Point Street Bridge, beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday morning when police closed the span to vehicle traffic. Nearly 21 hours later, just before sunrise, actor Glen Powell walked across the bridge alongside two companions in what became the production’s closing local scene. By 4:44 a.m., Abrams’ team had finished their work, signaling not only the end of the Rhode Island shoot but, reportedly, the conclusion of filming for the movie worldwide.

Neon has assembled a powerhouse English-language voice cast for its upcoming animated feature Arco, tapping Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Flea, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Samberg. The film is set to make its English-language world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Centerpiece section on September 7, ahead of its U.S. theatrical release on November 14.
