Actor Joe Manganiello has shared deeply personal photographs documenting the physical toll of a seven year battle with an autoimmune disease, revealing that he lost 60 pounds following major intestinal surgery.

The Magic Mike star posted the images on October 15, days after releasing his memoir, Bloodlines, which details his prolonged struggle with serious health complications. The photographs offer a glimpse into a period marked by hospital stays, painful symptoms and extensive medical treatment.

In his Instagram post, Manganiello explained that his weight began falling rapidly after surgeons amputated his large intestine. He said he ultimately lost 60 pounds during the two weeks following the operation.

One photograph shows the 49 year old sitting shirtless beside a hospital bed while connected to intravenous lines. He also shared an image documenting his abdomen after a subsequent reconnection and reversal procedure, alongside a close up photograph of a skin condition that developed during his illness.

Manganiello explained that his skin, which plays an important role in the body's immune system, was affected by numerous conditions during the ordeal. He described experiencing several problems, often at the same time, highlighting the widespread physical effects he endured.

The actor had previously discussed the beginnings of his health problems while promoting his memoir. According to his account, the symptoms emerged shortly after his marriage to Colombian American actress Sofía Vergara in 2015.

He described developing ulcers in his digestive tract that caused severe abdominal pain. The pain became so intense that he was sometimes unable to walk. Other symptoms included fevers, blistering rashes, headaches and debilitating fatigue.

The revelations provide a more detailed picture of a difficult chapter in the actor's life, extending beyond the public image associated with his successful screen career. By sharing the photographs, Manganiello has allowed followers to see the extent of the medical challenges he describes in his book.

His memoir also addresses the breakdown of his marriage to Vergara, with whom he separated before their divorce in 2023. The relationship and its ending form part of the personal history explored in Bloodlines, alongside his account of living with a prolonged illness.

Manganiello's decision to publish images from his hospital experience brings attention to the physical and emotional realities of serious, long term health conditions. The photographs also underline how dramatically an illness can alter a person's life away from public appearances and professional commitments.

While his account describes a lengthy and difficult recovery, the actor has chosen to make those experiences part of his public story, offering readers a more intimate understanding of the struggles behind his memoir.
