Ryan Reynolds is reminiscing on a traumatic injury.
The Deadpool star said that he was hospitalized for four weeks in the 1990s after being hit by a drunk driver.
"When I was 18, I left a bar and had a beer," Reynolds said in a June 9 GQ video with Welcome to Wrexham co-star Rob Mac. "I walked back and glanced at my car for a moment. I figured, "You know what? I'm not going to drive anywhere. No way, even if it's only four blocks away.
Even though the 49-year-old took what he described as a "firmly positive and wise decision," calamity occurred.
"Instead, I turned around, started to cross the street," he said, "and I was run over by a drunk driver."
As a result of the collision, Reynolds stated that he "broke every bone in my left side."
"He hit me so hard," he said. "His car was not operational."
This was not the first time the Definitely, Maybe actor—father of James, 11, Inez, 9, Betty, 6, and Olin, 3, with wife Blake Lively—discussed the terrible ordeal.
"I woke up three days later," he said in a 2011 interview with CTV News, according to the New York Daily News, revealing that his late father, James Reynolds, was sitting in his hospital room with a "vomit tray."
"I guess I had been heaving in my unconscious," he explained. "There's nothing more romantic than painting someone with three-day-old Gin Rummy. I just soaked the dude from head to toe in vomit.
Reynolds has not been the same since the tragedy. He said, "I've been a rickety, broken mess."
Still, the Emmy winner has insisted on performing his own stunts over the years.
"I really like physicality in movies," Reynolds told Variety in 2022. "I believe it's critical to accomplish as much of it yourself as possible. But I'll stand aside when something is simply too gruesome and a skilled specialist is ready to proceed."
And that's because, admittedly, he's had to take a step back with age.
“You’re not allowed to eat Advil like cereal,” Reynolds quipped. “Things start to hurt. After I turned 35, being thrown onto cement wasn’t hilarious anymore. It had been upgraded to hell.”
