Reality TV figure and author Gypsy Rose Blanchard has stepped forward to financially support a former Spirit Airlines employee. The donation comes in the wake of an intense public controversy involving beauty influencer James Charles, who faced massive backlash after publicly ridiculing the laid-off worker on social media.
The drama unfolded in May 2026 after Spirit Airlines abruptly ceased operations, leaving more than 17,000 employees suddenly jobless. Among them was Amber Lendof Vargas, a 30-year-old operations agent at Boston Logan International Airport. Seeking immediate financial assistance to cover bills during her unexpected job transition, Vargas launched a GoFundMe campaign and reached out to several high-profile digital creators via direct message, hoping they might share or contribute to her cause.
However, the outreach backfired when prominent beauty guru James Charles chose to weaponize the private request for content. In a since-deleted TikTok video, Charles vehemently berated Vargas, calling her a “lazy piece of s***” and “entitled” for asking celebrities to fund her life instead of simply applying for new jobs. The heavily criticized video went viral for all the wrong reasons, sparking immediate accusations of elitism and causing Charles to bleed hundreds of thousands of social media followers within days.
As the internet rallied around Vargas, Blanchard joined the effort by donating more than $500 to the fundraiser. Along with the financial contribution, Blanchard left a supportive message stating: “Hi, my name is Gypsy Rose Blanchard and I am an influencer on TikTok. I have 9.3 million followers and I’m truly sorry for what happened and I’m sending many positive vibes.” Blanchard subsequently amplified the cause by sharing the donation link directly with her large follower base.
In a statement addressing her involvement, Blanchard noted she originally believed her supportive message would remain private, but emphasized the underlying principle of her actions. She expressed that having a massive online platform comes with a distinct social responsibility, adding that a large following never gives someone the right to bully others.
While Charles has since deleted his video, issued a public apology, and reportedly made a private donation of his own, Vargas has explicitly rejected his remorse, stating that the public humiliation cannot be undone. Driven significantly by the viral controversy and Blanchard’s boost, Vargas’s GoFundMe campaign successfully eclipsed its original goals, raising tens of thousands of dollars from strangers.
