The season finale of Saturday Night Live delivered one of its most shocking and chaotic “Weekend Update” joke swaps yet, as comedians Michael Che and Colin Jost pushed the limits of live television with a series of controversial jokes that left the studio audience gasping.
The joke swap segment has become a tradition on the show since 2018. During the segment, Che and Jost write offensive and outrageous jokes for each other to read live on air without seeing them beforehand. Over the years, the bit has become increasingly extreme, and this year’s season finale may have been the most explosive installment yet.
The segment began with Jost reading a joke written by Che about a newly introduced autism Barbie doll from Mattel. The line immediately drew loud reactions from the audience and set the tone for the uncomfortable humor that followed throughout the segment.
Che then read a self deprecating joke written by Jost about a study concerning average penis size in America. From there, the jokes escalated quickly into racially charged material. Jost was forced to read a controversial joke about actor Michael B. Jordan and the film Sinners, followed by another joke in which he jokingly pledged his salary to Dr Umar’s school for Black boys while referencing his Staten Island ferry.
One of the night’s most talked about moments came when Che was forced to read a deeply offensive joke involving Michael Jackson. Before reading the cue card, Che warned Jost by saying, “You’re a terrible person.” He then launched into a shocking monologue claiming that “Michael Jackson did nothing wrong,” followed by disturbing jokes referencing allegations against the late pop star.
The audience reacted with loud groans and disbelief as Che continued the bit, which also included a fabricated story about Jackson molesting him as a child. The joke ended with Che claiming the experience gave him “a fetish for middle aged white women.” The moment instantly became one of the most controversial parts of the entire episode.
Jost was later forced to read another offensive joke involving rapper Ye and Adolf Hitler. Attempting to apologize within the joke itself, Jost then dramatically announced that he would sacrifice “the most important thing” in his life by shaving off his famous hair live on television.
A barber was brought onto the “Weekend Update” set and clippers were placed near Jost’s head as he nervously sat under a barber cape. Jost jokingly told the barber, “Jerome, make me unpretty.” However, just before the barber could begin shaving his hair, Che stopped the stunt and admitted he could not believe Jost was actually willing to go through with it.
The joke swap ended with laughter, shock and applause from the audience, once again proving why the segment has become one of the most anticipated recurring bits on the show. Previous editions of the joke swap have also gone viral, including moments where Jost was forced to read vulgar jokes about his wife Scarlett Johansson while she watched backstage.
The Season 51 finale of Saturday Night Live was hosted by Will Ferrell with music legend Paul McCartney serving as the musical guest.
