A construction worker has died after suffering severe injuries while helping to build the stage for Shakira's upcoming "Todo Mundo No Rio" concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, scheduled for May 2.
Concert organizers confirmed the incident in a statement shared on social media, saying that "an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26th) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show."
They added that "first responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital."
The local fire brigade said the worker suffered "crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system." According to their statement, the victim had already been removed from the equipment by colleagues before emergency services arrived.
"Military personnel from the ambulance service of the 3rd Maritime Group (GMAR-Copacabana) immediately began pre-hospital care on the victim, who was then transported to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, death was confirmed."
Authorities have not publicly released the worker's identity. Some reports indicated he was a local worker involved in stage construction rather than part of Shakira's touring crew. Witnesses described a sudden and chaotic scene during the incident.
The concert, set to take place on Copacabana Beach, is expected to attract massive crowds, with the location known for hosting large-scale free music events attended by millions.
Organizers said they are supporting those affected, stating, "At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim's family."
Shakira had earlier expressed excitement about the show, writing on Instagram: "Almost there, Rio!!! Prepping so many surprises for you: guest artists, new wardrobe, songs you'll love to hear... Can't wait to be there..."
She also referred to Copacabana Beach as the "altar do planeta," or the "altar of the planet." No public comment has yet been made by the singer regarding the accident.
The concert remains scheduled to proceed on May 2.
