Usha Vance has shared insight into her decision to expand her family while navigating life in the national spotlight, revealing how she and her husband, JD Vance, chose to have a fourth child.

The couple, already parents to three young children, announced earlier this year that they are expecting a baby boy due in July. Their growing family will mark a rare moment in U.S. political history, as they are set to become the first vice presidential family to welcome a child while in office since the 1870s.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Usha reflected on how her perspective on family evolved over time. "I grew up in a family of two. And I thought that was a great number," she said. "And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn't feel quite done, right?"

She explained that while having a third child initially made their family feel complete, her feelings gradually shifted. "We have our daughter, who's amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn't sure," she said. "But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility."

Her husband previously joked about convincing her to have another child, recalling, "Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby... But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both." Usha later responded with a laugh, acknowledging that he had influenced the decision "in a manner of speaking," while noting that she had always been open to the idea.

"And so if there was a chance, I should take it," she added. "I knew that I'd be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I'd be happy if we had four. And so here we are."

Beyond family life, Usha described her role as a supportive partner to the vice president, noting that while they do not always agree, their differences create room for thoughtful discussion. "There's no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything," she said. "The expectation is that we are going to be open-minded and have a conversation."

She also shared that she serves as a trusted sounding board for her husband on more personal matters, offering perspective and support when needed.

As she adjusts to public life, Usha has continued to maintain elements of normalcy, from family routines to everyday activities, while also preparing to launch her new podcast aimed at encouraging children to read.

Reflecting on her journey, she highlighted the balance between public responsibility and private life, embracing both her evolving role and the growth of her family.
