The long-running ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy delivered an emotional tribute to the late Eric Dane during the episode that aired on Thursday, Feb. 26, honouring the actor just one week after his death at age 53.
At the close of the episode, the show aired a roughly 60-second montage celebrating Dane's fan-favourite character, Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan. The video revisited some of the plastic surgeon's most memorable moments from his years at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, reminding viewers why the character remained one of the series' most beloved figures.
The tribute was set to Tommee Profitt and Fleurie's cover of "Chasing Cars," a song with deep roots in the show's history. The track first became closely associated with the drama during the season two finale in 2006 and has since been used during several of the series' most emotional storylines, including the milestone 400th episode montage in 2022.
Sharing the clip online, the show's official social media account wrote, "In loving memory of Eric Dane. ❤️" The montage concluded with a black-and-white portrait of the actor, marking a poignant full-circle moment that coincided with the 20th anniversary of his first appearance on the series.
Dane originally joined the cast in season two as Mark Sloan, the charismatic plastic surgeon and close friend of Derek Shepherd. The character, quickly nicknamed "McSteamy", proved an instant hit with audiences, leading to Dane becoming a series regular the following season. Over seven seasons, Mark's storylines explored complicated friendships, romances and fatherhood before the character was written out following injuries from a plane crash.
Even after his on-screen death, Dane made later guest appearances, including a return during Meredith Grey's dream-like beach sequences in season 17.
News of Dane's passing prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans. Series creator Shonda Rhimes honoured the actor, describing him as "a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and on audiences around the world."
Dane is survived by his daughters, Billie and Georgia, whom he shared with actress Rebecca Gayheart. Following his death, friends launched a fundraiser to help support the girls' future, which has already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
For longtime viewers, the brief but powerful montage served as a reminder of the lasting impact both Dane and his iconic McSteamy character left on the Grey's Anatomy legacy.
