Rasmus Dahlin and Carolina Matovac shared that they experienced a devastating loss during her health scare.
Nearly six months after the Buffalo Sabres player's fiancée underwent a heart transplant in France due to organ failure, she spoke out about losing a pregnancy while fighting for her life.
"Today was meant to be the day we finally met you," Carolina wrote in an Instagram post on January 26. "You will always have a special place in our hearts as our first baby, even though we never met. Our love for you is limitless. Though you did not get to experience this world, you played an important role in ensuring that I could remain a part of it."
Indeed, Carolina, 25, stated that her concerns about her pregnancy led her to take her own illness seriously when she became ill while on vacation with Rasmus this summer.
"If it weren't for my worries about you, we might never have called for help and gone to the hospital," she told me. "As a result of that decision, I was in the right place at the right time during my first heart failure. This is just one of the many reasons I'm alive today, able to resume my normal life."
She concluded, "You are our hero, and I hope you are well taken care of in heaven. "We love you, baby Matovac Dahlin."
Carolina's message comes two months after she revealed that she had "so much to be grateful for” after her emergency heart transplant.
“It’s essential to never take life for granted,” Carolina wrote in a November 2025 post. “One day you could be on vacation, and the next you might wake up with a new organ transplanted. Life is unpredictable and full of surprises, so enjoy every moment of it.”
Indeed, in a note Rasmus wrote in September ahead of the start of the NHL season, the hockey star revealed that the couple's summer vacation to the South of France took an unexpected turn for the worse when Carolina became ill and was kept on life support until she received an organ donation.
"This has undoubtedly been the most difficult chapter of our lives, but it has taught us so much," the 25-year-old said in a letter posted on the NHL website. "We will continue to grow from these experiences and are extremely grateful for all of the love and support we have received. We are truly blessed in so many ways, and we fully understand how fortunate we are."
