In a financial milestone revealed nearly five years after their high-profile split, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has completed transfer of wealth to his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates. New tax filings, first reported by The New York Times show that Gates transferred approximately $7.88 billion to Melinda’s private philanthropic organization, Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, marking one of the largest charitable payouts in history.
The disclosure provides the most detailed look yet at the final stages of the couple’s 2021 divorce settlement. While the pair initially divided a fortune that included $170 million in real estate, a $130 million art collection, and billions in Microsoft stock, a separate charitable agreement was triggered when Melinda formally stepped down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in May 2024. Under that arrangement, Bill committed a total of $12.5 billion to support Melinda’s independent work.
A spokesperson for Melinda’s firm, Pivotal Ventures, confirmed that the $12.5 billion agreement has now been “fully fulfilled.” Beyond the $7.88 billion recorded in public tax documents, the remaining $4.6 billion is believed to have been transferred to Melinda’s limited liability company (LLC), which is not subject to the same public disclosure requirements as a traditional non-profit foundation.
The dissolution of the 27-year marriage in 2021 was heavily scrutinized following revelations regarding Bill’s past conduct. At the time, reports surfaced concerning an extramarital affair with a Microsoft employee in 2000, as well as his past meetings with Jeffrey Epstein—associations Melinda reportedly cited as a primary factor in her decision to seek a divorce. In a 2022 interview, Bill admitted to causing “a lot of pain” to his family and acknowledged making “mistakes” that led to the end of the marriage.
Since the split, Melinda French Gates has emerged as one of the most powerful independent forces in global philanthropy. With her estimated net worth now exceeding $25 billion, she has focused her resources on Pivotal Philanthropies and Pivotal Ventures, primarily targeting gender equality, mental health for young people, and economic mobility for women. While the “Gates Foundation” continues its global health work under Bill’s leadership, this $12.5 billion finalization officially cements Melinda’s status as a billionaire with the autonomous capital to reshape the social landscape on her own terms.
