Amanda Seyfried has shared how OCD has quietly shaped both her personal life and her career choices since she was a teenager.

The actress revealed that she was diagnosed with OCD at 19 while working on the HBO series Big Love, a time she now describes as overwhelming. The condition became serious enough that her mother temporarily relocated to support her as she sought medical care.

"I was living in Marina del Rey at the time, shooting Big Love. My mom had to take a sabbatical from work in Pennsylvania to live with me for a month," Seyfried said. Medical evaluations followed, leading to long-term treatment. "That's when I got on medication — which to this day, I'm on every night."

Seyfried described her OCD as "really extreme," explaining that it influenced how she approached social life in an industry often associated with excess. While many of her peers embraced nightlife and spontaneity, she chose structure and restraint to protect her mental health.

She said she avoided behaviours that could destabilize her condition, including substance use and late nights. "I would make plans and then just not go," she admitted, adding, "I didn't enter that realm of nightclubs. I gotta give credit to my OCD."

Rather than seeing those limitations as losses, Seyfried suggested they helped her develop boundaries early on. She has also been vocal about rejecting stigma around psychiatric medication, emphasizing that treatment should not be viewed differently from care for physical illness.

In addition to reflecting on her mental health journey, Seyfried discussed her latest projects, including The Testament of Ann Lee, a musical biopic about the founder of the Shaker movement. She explained that portraying Ann Lee required her to rethink how she approached singing.

"She doesn't sing the way I sing," Seyfried said. "She's singing to get closer to God." Letting go of technical perfection was challenging, she added, but ultimately freeing: "I had to wrap my head around singing from a place within me that doesn't care about how it sounds."
The actress also spoke about motherhood and how time away from her children remains the hardest part of her career. "I really would rather be home with you," she said, reflecting on the tension between professional demands and family life.
