Chad Ollinger, a former reality television personality known for his appearance on the Discovery Channel series Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, is facing murder charges following the death of his cellmate. According to police reports and court filings released on December 31, 2025, Ollinger admitted to authorities that he killed his fellow inmate because he believed the man was a pedophile.
The incident occurred within the state correctional facility where Ollinger was serving time for unrelated charges. Correctional officers discovered the victim, whose identity has not been publicly released pending family notification, unresponsive in the cell shared with Ollinger during a routine evening wellness check. Medical staff attempted life-saving measures, but the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.
During a subsequent interrogation with investigators, Ollinger reportedly provided a full confession. He claimed that he had discovered the nature of his cellmate’s past crimes and felt a moral obligation to act. “I thought he was a pedophile,” Ollinger allegedly told detectives, citing this belief as his primary motive for the lethal assault. Police noted that Ollinger remained calm during the interview, expressing no remorse for his actions and maintaining that he was protecting others by removing the individual from the population.
Ollinger’s transition from a television personality to a defendant in a murder trial marks a stark downfall for the treasure hunter. On Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch, Chad appeared alongside his father, Duane Ollinger, as they searched for gold and Aztec artifacts on their 160-acre property in Utah’s Uinta Basin. The show, which premiered in 2021, featured Chad as a dedicated explorer willing to dive into flooded caverns and navigate dangerous terrain. However, his life outside of production had become marred by legal troubles that eventually led to his incarceration.
Prosecutors are now working to determine if Ollinger’s claims regarding his cellmate’s criminal history are accurate, though they emphasized that even if the victim were a sex offender, vigilante justice within the prison system is a capital offense. Ollinger has been moved to administrative segregation and is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is expected to be scheduled for early January 2026, where he will be formally arraigned on charges of first-degree murder.
