Ryan Lochte has responded to public criticism surrounding both his decision to sell several Olympic gold medals and recent comments about his estranged wife, Kayla Reid Lochte, as their divorce continues to unfold publicly.
The 41-year-old Olympian announced on Dec. 10 that three of the six gold medals he earned during the 2004, 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games would be auctioned through Goldin. Days later, Lochte addressed the move in a statement shared on Instagram, explaining that his career was never defined by medals alone.
He said his motivation in swimming was always centred on excellence in the sport rather than accolades, describing the medals as "the cherry on top of an incredible journey." Lochte noted that he earned 90 international medals across major competitions, including world championships and continental games, and emphasized that the true value of those achievements lies in how they have been used to inspire others. He added that he has frequently given medals to fans and children, saying the memories and connections formed throughout his career matter most to him.
Lochte also used the statement to clarify remarks made earlier in December when he announced plans to publish a tell-all book. In that post, he referenced emotional strain during his marriage and wrote that he woke up daily feeling "belittled" before being "kicked out of our family home."
The following day, Kayla shared a video from their 2018 wedding in which Lochte recited his vows, captioning it, "Sharing a special reminder." The post fueled online backlash toward the swimmer.
Addressing the response, Lochte said navigating personal issues publicly has been "incredibly tough" and stressed that his intention was not to cause harm but to express his personal feelings. He explained that many details have been kept private to protect their three children — son Caiden, 8, and daughters Liv, 6, and Georgia, 2.
Lochte acknowledged Kayla's decision to share their vows, saying it highlighted the authenticity of their relationship at the time. However, he maintained that they did not fully know each other then and admitted he lacked self-awareness during the marriage.
The swimmer also reflected on personal accountability, stating that therapy has played a significant role in his growth. He expressed regret over the pain caused to those close to him, including Kayla, and admitted he was not a good husband. Lochte concluded by asking for understanding as he moves forward and said he will no longer publicly discuss matters related to his marriage.
