Selena Gomez has responded directly to ongoing speculation about changes in her voice, offering clarity during a recent Instagram Live session after fans questioned noticeable differences in her tone over the years.
The 33-year-old singer and actress acknowledged that the topic has come up repeatedly, explaining that physical changes can sometimes affect how she sounds. "I've gotten this question a few times," Gomez said during the livestream on December 16. "I don't really care. I think my point is that things happen. My throat kind of swells on the inside sometimes. That's all."
Gomez did not point to a single cause during the live discussion, but she has previously spoken openly about her health. She was diagnosed with lupus in her early 20s and underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 due to lupus-related complications. She has also shared that she lives with bipolar disorder and has discussed how medication for her conditions has affected her body over time.
While addressing the voice speculation, Gomez expressed appreciation for the honesty of her audience. "I'm glad you're being real with me on the Live," she said. "I appreciate it."
In recent months, online discussions about her voice have intensified, with social media users debating changes in tone, pitch, and delivery. Some commenters speculated about cosmetic procedures, while others suggested the shifts could be health related. Gomez's livestream remarks appeared aimed at closing the conversation without engaging in detailed explanations.
The Rare Beauty founder has also recently addressed other comments about her appearance with a similar level of openness. A day before the voice discussion, she spoke about discoloration near her upper lip after a follower asked about it. "It's actually not [facial hair], it's my melasma," Gomez said in a video shared to her Instagram Stories. "I take care of it and treat it, but yeah, no, it's there."
She explained that melasma, a common skin condition that can create darker patches, was triggered by sun exposure. "It's actually from the sun," she added, encouraging the use of sunscreen.
Gomez has previously spoken about how her medication has led to changes in her weight. During an Instagram Live in 2023, she explained that she often retains water weight while on treatment and tends to lose it when she is no longer taking the medication. She later addressed the public response to these fluctuations, noting that she faced criticism and body shaming related to weight gain connected to her lupus.
