Aaron Carter's former fiancée, Melanie Martin, has accused the late singer's mother, Jane Carter, of attempting to claim rights to their son Prince's inheritance. Prince, born in November 2021 during Martin and Aaron's engagement, became the sole beneficiary of Aaron's estate following his death in November 2022. Authorities confirmed Aaron's passing was due to accidental drowning, influenced by Xanax and difluoroethane, an inhalant.

"Hi guys, I'm just going to say it straight up: Aaron's mother is trying to gain rights to Prince's inheritance and his name," Martin, 33, wrote in a Facebook post on December 3. She added, "I have to pay a lot of court fees and lawyer fees in the next few months, so I'll be working extra hard on Love Merch and bartending in the meantime to pay for all the court fees and ensure my son gets Aaron's rightful inheritance. Aaron didn't have much family but he did have fans and you all continue to care about Aaron's family which is Prince and I." Love Merch is an apparel and beauty website created in honor of the late singer.

Jane Carter has faced legal issues in the past, including a 2023 arrest for domestic battery following an argument with an adult family member. In the mid-2000s, she served as Aaron's manager, a period when Aaron accused her of stealing $100,000, though the matter was later settled.

The Carter family has endured multiple tragedies over the years. Aaron's sister Leslie died from a drug overdose in 2012, and another sister, Bobbie Jean, passed away in 2023 due to fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication. Aaron's twin sister, Angel Carter, reflected on these losses and her late brother during a Cure Addiction Now event in Los Angeles. "I buried Aaron about five minutes from my house for us, so I went there after I dropped my daughter off at school, and I'm able to just go and have that moment with him," Angel shared.

Two years after Aaron's death, Prince made his red-carpet debut alongside Martin and Angel at the Paramount+ documentary screening The Carters: Hurts to Love You, which chronicled the family's battles with addiction, mental illness, and neglect.
