The small moment added to a growing list of affectionate gestures he has been displaying in public, something that has become more noticeable since Kate announced in March 2024 that she was receiving treatment for cancer and shared earlier this year that she is now in remission. According to royal commentator Ingrid Seward, William has been more openly caring in public, and the couple seems comfortable letting others see their closeness. Seward previously said that William is extremely proud of Kate's strength and resilience and feels protective of her after a difficult period in their lives.
During the visit, Kate and William viewed historical objects tied to Germany as part of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's official state visit to the United Kingdom. While older generations of royals, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, typically avoided overt public affection, there are no formal rules restricting it. Royal etiquette expert Myka Meier has explained that such gestures are left to the couple's judgement and usually depend on the formality of the occasion.
William's gentle touch during the tour reflected this more relaxed approach. It also follows other recent displays of affection between the couple. On November 19, William lifted Kate's hand for a brief kiss as they stepped out of their car at the Royal Variety Performance in London. Videos from that evening captured Kate giving William a loving look on the red carpet and William resting his hand on her back as they entered the Royal Albert Hall. The evening marked their return to the red carpet after a two-year break while Kate stepped back from public duties during her treatment.
William has recently spoken about how challenging the past year has been. In an interview for The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, he said that 2024 was the hardest year he has ever faced, balancing responsibilities while trying to protect his children, support Kate through her treatment and manage concerns for his father following King Charles's cancer diagnosis earlier that year. William said it has been essential for his family to have the time and space to cope with the difficulties they have faced while continuing their royal duties.
