Broadway and television star Lea Michele has shared the remarkable story behind her Broadway debut at just eight years old, revealing how a chance twist of fate set her on the path to stardom.

In an interview with Elle, Michele recalled that in 1995, a childhood friend was supposed to attend an open audition for Les Misérables. When the friend's father suffered a heart attack, Michele accompanied her to the audition and decided to try out herself, despite never having sung publicly before.

"My parents told me, 'You can't sing,'" Michele said. "They didn't know that I could." The young hopeful practiced Angel of Music from Phantom of the Opera in her room the night before and performed it the next day in front of casting directors.

To everyone's surprise, she impressed the judges immediately. "They asked my mom if I had an agent," Michele recounted. "When we left, I told my mom, 'I think I'm going to get this.' She said, 'Things like this don't happen to people like us.' Two weeks later, I was on Broadway."

That audition marked the beginning of a career that would span decades. Michele, now 39, went on to star in Spring Awakening, Glee, and Funny Girl, becoming one of Broadway's most recognizable names. She is set to return to the stage in Chess, which will be performed in the same theater where she first appeared as a child.

Reflecting on her journey, Michele expressed gratitude for her early break. "I can't imagine being anywhere else," she said. "This is where I'm meant to be."

Despite the competitive nature of show business, Michele's story remains a testament to talent, timing, and tenacity. And yes she confirmed with a laugh, that childhood friend she replaced at the audition? "She's OK. We're still friends."
