Diane Keaton's family has officially disclosed that the beloved actress died of pneumonia on October 11, and has thanked the public for the outpouring of love and sympathy. The confirmation arrives days after People first reported on her death at age 79.

"The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11," the family said in a statement. "She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her."

Until now, details about her passing remained private. On Oct. 11, People reported the news of her death and confirmed that further information would be withheld as her family asked for privacy during this difficult time.

A source had told People that Keaton's health "declined very suddenly," calling her death "unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit." The source added that in her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, and many longtime friends were unaware of her condition.

Keaton first gained fame in the 1970s for her roles in The Godfather series and her storied collaboration with Woody Allen. She won a Best Actress Oscar for Annie Hall in 1977. Over her long career, she appeared in films like The First Wives Club, Something's Gotta Give, The Family Stone, and Poms, and even ventured into directing on projects such as Heaven and Hanging Up.

Born Diane Hall in 1946 in Los Angeles, she adopted two children; daughter Dexter in 1996 and son Duke in 2001, and never married. Known for her independent spirit and unique style, she once reflected, "I'm really glad I didn't get married ... I'm an oddball."

As the world mourns a distinctive talent, her family has asked that tributes in her memory be directed to causes she cared deeply about. In doing so, they invite fans to honor not just her artistry, but her compassion and values.
