Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor and director whose career spanned more than six decades, has died at the age of 89.

The Hollywood icon passed away on Tuesday morning at his home in the mountains of Utah, according to his publicist, who described it as "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved." Redford's family has requested privacy as they mourn.

Known for his golden-boy charm and rugged screen presence, Redford became one of the most recognizable leading men of the late 1960s and 1970s. He starred in celebrated classics including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Natural, and All the President's Men.

In addition to acting, Redford carved out a remarkable career behind the camera. His directorial debut, Ordinary People (1980), earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. He later received an honorary Oscar in 2002 for his lasting impact on the film industry.

Beyond Hollywood, Redford reshaped independent filmmaking by founding the Sundance Institute in 1981. Its annual Sundance Film Festival, held in Park City, Utah, has since become one of the world's leading showcases for independent cinema. "I saw stories that weren't being told," Redford said in a 2018 interview. "Sundance was about giving those voices a chance."

Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on 18 August 1936 in Santa Monica, California, he grew up with a passion for art and sports but struggled academically. After briefly attending the University of Colorado Boulder, Redford traveled across Europe, an experience he credited with shaping his worldview.

Redford was also a dedicated environmentalist and political activist. He used his platform to advocate for conservation efforts, helping protect national monuments and natural landscapes throughout the United States.

Throughout his career, Redford earned numerous accolades, including three Golden Globes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was presented by President Barack Obama in 2016.

President Obama praised him as a man who "captured the American spirit on screen while giving back to future generations through storytelling and preservation."
