Court records obtained by People reveal that Wendy Williams will remain under legal guardianship following a comprehensive medical evaluation that reaffirmed her diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia. These findings, which stem from extensive neuropsychological testing and brain imaging, support an extension of the guardianship until November 5, 2025—ensuring she remains under the care and financial oversight of court-appointed guardian Sabrina Morrissey.
The results of this rediagnosis represent a significant setback for Williams, who has publicly contested the validity of her cognitive decline. Earlier this year, she insisted she had passed psychological evaluations and maintained her mental clarity. A prominent attorney for Williams recently described the diagnoses as false, asserting that she remains “lucid and in control of her faculties” and that the guardianship is excessive.
Williams’s ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, has also contributed to the legal drama by filing a lawsuit against Morrissey. Hunter alleges abuse and financial mismanagement throughout the guardianship process, seeking a complete financial audit, $250 million in damages, and the replacement of the current guardian. His lawsuit echoes mounting concerns about the restrictiveness and transparency of guardianship arrangements.
The roots of Wendy Williams’s guardianship trace back to mid-2022, when Wells Fargo filed to freeze her accounts amid suspicions of exploitation. The court responded by appointing Morrissey to oversee both Williams’s finances and health. In early 2024, Williams’s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia became publicly known, fueling a contentious legal and personal battle.
Despite being placed under guardianship, Williams has continually asserted her independence. In various interviews, she equated the arrangement to “prison,” lamenting her loss of autonomy and expressing frustration over restricted freedoms in the care facility where she resides. Her niece has also publicly supported her, suggesting that Williams’s mental state does not align with the incapacitated label she has been given.
