Katie Holmes is making a major creative leap with Happy Hours, a new feature film trilogy she will write, direct, and star in—marking an on-screen reunion with her Dawson’s Creek co-star Joshua Jackson. The upcoming project, revealed by Deadline, is shaping up to be a nostalgic and emotional return for fans of the iconic teen drama, while also exploring mature and nuanced storytelling through a character-driven dramedy.
Set to film in New York City this summer, Happy Hours will center on two characters (played by Holmes and Jackson) who reconnect later in life after once being young lovers. The trilogy will follow their journey navigating the complexities of adult life—careers, family responsibilities, and the enduring pursuit of love in the face of personal obstacles. Each installment will build on their shared past and present, telling a layered story full of emotional beats, joys, loss, and hope.
Holmes, known for roles in both blockbuster hits like Batman Begins and indie gems such as Pieces of April and The Ice Storm, brings a seasoned touch behind the camera. She’s previously directed and starred in Rare Objects, Alone Together, and All We Had. With Happy Hours, she expands her storytelling ambitions into a multi-film arc that will blend sharp emotional insight with grounded, relatable drama.
In addition to Holmes and Jackson, the trilogy features a standout ensemble cast: Mary-Louise Parker, Constance Wu, Joe Tippett, John McGinty, Donald Webber Jr., Nathan Darrow, Johnna Dias-Watson, and Jack Martin. Each actor brings a unique dynamic to the story’s ensemble, promising a rich character landscape.
The trilogy is produced by Maven Screen Media and Bond Street Station, in association with Crown Productions and STX Films. Producers include Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler for Maven, with Peter Coleman and Paula P. Manzanedo representing Bond Street Station. Annie Herndon will oversee the project for STX Films, alongside Jenny Halper, Sophia Pedlow, and Jackie Donohoe for Maven.
Joshua Jackson, most recently seen in ABC’s Doctor Odyssey and Karate Kid: Legends alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, continues his strong post-Dawson’s Creek career. His return opposite Holmes is already stirring buzz among longtime fans of the WB series.
Production on the first installment begins this summer, with the sequels set to follow closely after. Holmes’ return to the spotlight—both in front of and behind the camera—signals a personal, creative project with heartfelt roots, strong performances, and the promise of a story that resonates across generations.
