Stevie Wonder has addressed persistent rumors by signing, sealing, and delivering his response. When the R&B icon performed in Cardiff, Wales, as part of his Love, Light, and Song U.K. tour, he addressed long-standing rumors that he is not blind.
"I must share with you all something I was considering: 'When did I want to share this with the world?'" As seen in a fan's Instagram video, Stevie stated, "But I wanted to say it right now," while performing live on July 10. "Are you aware of the rumors that I've seen and all that? But really, you are aware of the reality.
The 75-year-old also clarified the situation for anyone who was unaware of it.
"The truth is, I went blind not long after I was born," Stevie added. "Now, that was a blessing because it gave me the ability to perceive the world through the eyes of sight and truth. Consider a person's character rather than their appearance. What color their spirit is, not what color they are
Furthermore, Stevie has already offered a poignant message regarding his blindness in addition to this thought-provoking response.
Even when his mother, Lula Mae Hardaway, was having a hard time accepting the reality that he was blind as a toddler, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer revealed that he was able to maintain a cheerful attitude.
"I was born. I became blind shortly after that," Stevie revealed in a 2024 episode of the audiobook series The Wonder of Stevie. "My mother went through the different things, and so my experience with that was deep."
“Mama, you shouldn’t cry; you’re making my head hurt,” the "Superstitious" singer recalled, recalling that his mother used to cry "every night" after he was originally diagnosed with the handicap.
"And I thought, 'Perhaps God has something greater for me than all of this,'" Stevie continued. "History demonstrated that to be true."
