Country music artist Conner Smith has been issued a misdemeanour citation following a tragic car accident that claimed the life of 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins. The incident occurred on June 8 in Nashville, Tennessee, as Dobbins was walking her dog across a marked crosswalk.

Smith, 24, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado at the time of the collision. Authorities determined that he was not distracted or under the influence when the accident occurred. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department cited Smith for failure to yield resulting in a fatality—a misdemeanour charge that highlights the absence of criminal intent, as confirmed by both law enforcement and sources close to the investigation.

Dobbins was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. She was a retired attorney specializing in divorce and family law and a grandmother of four. "She was the heart of the family," said her daughter, Nan Gentry, in a statement to WSMV-TV.

Smith's attorney, Worrick G. Robinson IV, expressed the singer's continued cooperation with the investigation. "Conner is incredibly grateful to the MNPD for their time and efforts to carefully investigate this tragic accident and has continued to cooperate at all times," he stated. "His thoughts remain with Ms. Dobbins' family, and he remains committed to honoring her memory with compassion by supporting efforts to improve pedestrian safety and help prevent future tragedies."

Since the accident, local authorities have implemented safety improvements at the site, including removing a tree that had obstructed visibility and installing clearer signage to mark the crosswalk. Sources indicate that Smith is "encouraged" by these changes and "deeply respects the advocacy shown by the Nashville community."

Smith, signed to Big Machine Records, is known for hits such as I Hate Alabama and Creek Will Rise. He was recently nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the 2024 ACM Awards and has 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His 2024 album Smoky Mountains charted at Number 42 on Billboard's Top Country Albums list. He is currently scheduled to perform across various states, including headlining Carey Fest in Ohio and appearing at the St. Pete Country Festival in Florida later this year.

Smith has not made a public statement since the citation was issued.
