Olivia Munn has revealed that her mother, Kim Munn, was diagnosed with breast cancer, just over a year after the actress shared her own cancer diagnosis. In an Instagram post on July 9, Munn shared that her mother's diagnosis came after taking a lifetime breast cancer risk assessment, the same test that led to Munn's own discovery in 2023.

"My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer," Munn wrote. "You may know that when I talk about my own battle with cancer I bring up the Lifetime Risk Assessment test that saved my life. I never would've predicted it would save my mom's life as well."

Although Kim's routine mammogram had shown no signs of concern, the risk assessment test scored her at 26.2%, which is considered high. Munn said she insisted on further screening, which led to an MRI and a diagnosis of Stage 1 Her2 breast cancer. "Shortly after that MRI, my mother was diagnosed," Munn stated. "She has since completed 12 rounds of chemo and will continue monthly Herceptin transfusions until this fall."

Reflecting on the experience, Munn said, "From my mom being there after my double mastectomy to me being there after hers. From me having to find an oncologist, to my mom and I sharing one." She added, "Going through cancer is really hard. But there's something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking."

Throughout her mother's treatment, Munn remained by her side. "I spent many nights taking care of my mom when the chemo became too much, wishing I could fight the fight for her, even if only for a day," she said.

Munn praised her mother's strength, writing, "I want to say how proud I am of my mom. She's handled all of this with bravery and humor while still driving us crazy. Just days after her double mastectomy she tried to do laundry and make dinner — she's insane."

She encouraged others to take the free, online risk assessment. "Anything above 20% is considered high risk," she explained, urging people to insist on further testing if necessary.

Munn concluded that her mother "wanted me to tell you that she hopes by sharing her story it will help save someone's life."
