Michael Madsen, the revered Hollywood actor known for his tough-guy roles, died from heart failure at age 67, his personal cardiologist confirmed. Heart disease and a long battle with alcoholism were cited as contributing factors, according to NBCLA.
Madsen was found unresponsive in his Malibu home on the morning of July 3. Authorities from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department pronounced him dead at 8:25 a.m., ruling out foul play. His assistant and longtime friend, Dougie Smith, revealed to TMZ that he discovered the actor after receiving no response the previous day. "He looked like he had been in the best health he had been in all year," Smith added.
Just days earlier, Madsen underwent a routine hospital check-up at UCLA. Despite past complications from a horse fall two years prior—resulting in a minor brain bleed and a shoulder injury—he was given a clean bill of health. "He had a PET scan and everything came back clear," said Smith.
Though Madsen wrestled with alcohol dependency for decades, friends claimed he had remained sober leading up to his death. TMZ sources described him as making a "consistent and valiant effort" toward sobriety, frequently attending rehab. However, some close to him remained uncertain about his mental state. A friend told The Sun that Madsen called on June 10, saying, "I'm getting evicted from my house," and asked for $10,000, indicating he planned to re-enter rehab.
In a joint statement, his managers Ron Smith and Susan Ferris, along with publicist Liz Rodriguez, reflected on his recent endeavors: "Michael was doing incredible work with independent film and was looking forward to this next chapter." He had three upcoming film releases and was finalizing a poetry book, Tears for My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.
Madsen's death prompted an outpouring of tributes. Sister Virginia Madsen described him as "thunder and velvet... a poet disguised as an outlaw." Actor Harvey Keitel remembered him as "another great American poet," and Vivica A. Fox praised his "amazing on-screen presence."
His son, who lost brother Hudson to suicide in 2022, called Michael "a hero." Madsen's final public appearance was at Chiller Theatre Expo in April. His sudden passing leaves a legacy of more than 325 film credits and an indelible mark on American cinema.
