After battling life-threatening burns, 33-year-old Ugandan Olympic marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei, who recently competed in the Paris Games, tragically passed away following a brutal gasoline attack by her partner. The shocking incident has reverberated through both the athletic world and global communities.

On September 1, 2024, Cheptegei was reportedly doused with gasoline and set on fire by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a heated dispute at their home in Trans Nzoia County, western Kenya. According to local police commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom, "The couple were heard quarreling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her."

Cheptegei, who  sustained burns to 75% of her body and was immediately rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret Kenya, for emergency treatment. Despite the medical team's efforts, Dr. Owen Menach, Director of Clinical Services and Surgery at MTRH, confirmed that Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries at approximately 5 a.m. local time on September 5, 2024. The cause of death was reported as "full organ failure."

The tragedy occurred just weeks after Cheptegei's 44th-place finish in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her athletic achievements also included a gold medal at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Family member Dr. Tony Sabila conveyed the heartbreaking news to Nation Sport, stating, "It is true that we lost our sister this morning although the doctors tried to save her life and I was there personally."

The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed their grief on social media, condemning the act of domestic violence and calling for justice. Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare described the attack as "a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete."

Reports suggest that the dispute between Cheptegei and Ndiema centered around land ownership. Cheptegei had reportedly purchased property in Trans Nzoia to be closer to the region's numerous athletic training facilities.

Ndiema, who also sustained burns in the incident, is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital. His condition is described as "improving and stable."

As the athletic community mourns the loss of a talented competitor, Cheptegei's father, Joseph, shared his grief with journalists, describing his daughter as "very supportive" and expressing hope for justice.

This tragic event has reignited discussions about domestic violence and the need for greater support systems for athletes. As investigations continue, many are calling for stricter measures to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
