Manchester City have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season by completing the signing of England international Niamh Charles from Women's Super League rivals Chelsea in a deal worth £500,000.

The 27-year-old left-back has agreed to a three-year contract after bringing an end to a successful six-year spell at Stamford Bridge. During her time with Chelsea, Charles established herself as one of the league's most dependable defenders, making 173 appearances and collecting an impressive list of honours.

She helped Chelsea win five Women's Super League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups, becoming a key figure in one of the most successful eras in the club's history. Charles also featured in the squad that reached the 2021 UEFA Women's Champions League final under former manager Emma Hayes, although Chelsea fell short against Barcelona.

Speaking after completing the move, Charles expressed her excitement about beginning the next chapter of her career with the reigning WSL champions.

"I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," she said.

"I've watched City from the outside and played against them many times over the years. They enjoyed a fantastic season and what they're building is something I really wanted to be part of. It feels like the perfect move for me and I'm looking forward to creating plenty of great memories with the team."

Charles began her professional career at Liverpool before joining Chelsea in 2020, where she developed into an experienced international defender. She now arrives at City hoping for regular playing time as she aims to strengthen her place in Sarina Wiegman's England squad ahead of next year's FIFA Women's World Cup.

The defender has earned 34 senior caps for the Lionesses and played a memorable role in England's Euro 2025 triumph, successfully converting a penalty during the shootout victory over Spain in the final.

Her arrival comes as City prepare for another campaign in both domestic and European competitions. Charles fills the vacancy left by Spanish full-back Leila Ouahabi, who recently joined Chicago Stars FC, and she will wear the No. 21 shirt.

City have been active in the transfer market after securing their first Women's Super League title in ten years. The club has already added England forward Beth Mead following her departure from Arsenal, while leading scorer Khadija Shaw committed her future by signing a new four-year contract earlier this year.

Director of football Therese Sjogran welcomed Charles to the club, describing her as an experienced player whose best football is still ahead of her.

Sjogran praised Charles' winning mentality, professionalism and desire to improve, adding that her leadership and quality will strengthen the squad as Manchester City aim to build on last season's success and compete for more silverware in England and Europe.
