Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill may soon recover a treasured piece of his football journey after the fan who bought one of his jerseys years ago offered to return it at no cost.

Gill, 26, has become one of Paraguay's standout performers during his first FIFA World Cup campaign. Following the team's dramatic victory over Germany in the Round of 32, an emotional story from his family's past resurfaced on social media, highlighting the sacrifices he made long before reaching football's biggest stage.

According to posts shared by Gill's wife, Melissa Avalos, the goalkeeper sold one of his jerseys in 2022 to help pay medical expenses after their son, Lauti, was born prematurely with serious health complications.

Avalos revisited the difficult period in an Instagram post published in August 2025, describing it as one of the toughest moments their family had ever faced. She explained that Gill sold clothing and memorabilia from the club he represented at the time so they could cover hospital costs while their newborn fought for his life.

Alongside the heartfelt message, Avalos shared photos from that period, including one showing baby Lauti receiving treatment in hospital.

She praised her husband for his unwavering commitment to his family, writing that she wished everyone could see his kind heart and determination. She added that both she and their son were incredibly proud of him.

Gill's story gained renewed attention after Paraguay defeated Germany on penalties following a 1 to 1 draw on June 29 to reach the Round of 16.

The man who purchased Gill's Under 20 national team jersey several years ago, Pedro Suarez, saw the story and decided it was time to give the shirt back.

Suarez had originally bought the jersey for 200,000 Paraguayan guaraní, which was worth about 33 dollars at the time. After Paraguay's memorable victory, he contacted Gill and told him he could have the jersey back without paying anything.

Suarez made just one playful request. He joked that Gill would first have to help Paraguay defeat France in their next World Cup match.

Speaking after the win over Germany, Gill said the result proved that Paraguay should never be underestimated. He explained that many people had doubted the team's chances but believed the victory showed the country is capable of achieving great things when given the opportunity.

Paraguay will now face France in the Round of 16 on Saturday, July 4, at Philadelphia Stadium, with Gill hoping to continue the nation's remarkable World Cup run while inspiring even more supporters with his story both on and off the pitch.
