Christian Eriksen is conscious and in stable condition after collapsing during Denmark's friendly match against Ukraine, according to the Danish Football Association.
The match was halted in the 65th minute when Eriksen suddenly went down on the pitch. Medical staff quickly rushed to his aid as players from both teams surrounded him in concern. The game was initially paused before being abandoned shortly afterward due to the seriousness of the incident.
Despite the alarming moment, the 34-year-old midfielder was later able to walk off the field on his own, reassuring teammates and fans. Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen regained consciousness shortly after the collapse and was responsive when medical staff reached him.
"Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself," Boesen said. "As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him."
Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), a type of heart device often referred to as a pacemaker, after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021. That incident led to a long recovery period and raised global concern for his health and future in football.
Boesen added that Eriksen will undergo further medical examinations in hospital to determine the cause of the latest episode. He also confirmed that the medical team remains in close communication with both Eriksen and hospital doctors.
"We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital," Boesen said. "But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was OK."
The ICD device allowed Eriksen to return to professional football in 2022, when he signed for Brentford in the Premier League, just months after his Euro 2020 collapse. He later joined Manchester United, where he spent three years before moving to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg last summer.
During the 2025 to 2026 season, Eriksen featured in 34 matches for Wolfsburg and was earning his 151st international cap for Denmark at the time of the incident, highlighting his continued importance to the national team.
Further updates are expected as medical assessments continue and authorities monitor his condition closely.
