Alexia Putellas has confirmed she will leave FC Barcelona Femení after spending 14 years with the club, opening the door for a potential move to London City Lionesses, who are reportedly pushing to secure her signature.

The 32-year-old midfielder is widely considered one of the most accomplished players in women's football history. Her departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter with Barcelona, where she developed into one of the sport's biggest stars and helped establish the club as a dominant force in Europe.

Putellas recently captained Barcelona to another major achievement after leading the team to Champions League glory on Saturday. The title represented her fourth European triumph with the club, adding to an already impressive list of honors that also includes 10 league titles.

Sources close to London City Lionesses suggest there is growing confidence within the club that a deal can be reached during the summer transfer window. Reports indicate that conversations between the club and Putellas have been ongoing for several months.

The Spanish international also enjoyed success on the international stage, winning the FIFA Women's World Cup with Spain in 2023 and later helping her country reach the final of UEFA Women's Euro, where they finished as runners-up to England.

Her career faced a major challenge when she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury just before the start of the 2022 European Championship, forcing her to miss the competition. After returning to action the following season, Putellas gradually regained top form and once again displayed the qualities that helped her win consecutive Ballon d'Or awards in 2021 and 2022.

London City are believed to be preparing an ambitious move and are willing to make a significant financial commitment that reflects Putellas' status among the world's elite players. The club has reportedly spent months planning for a major recruitment drive aimed at strengthening the squad.

The project could also hold personal appeal for Putellas. Spanish coach Eder Maestre leads the team, while close friend Jana Fernandez is already part of the squad. Reports have also linked Barcelona teammate Mapi Leon with a move.

Should London City complete the transfer, it could become one of the most significant signings in Women's Super League history.
