An Australian rules football player has been hospitalized after experiencing a mental health episode during a recent game.

The Carlton Football Club confirmed on Monday, April 20, that Elijah Hollands had been admitted to hospital following behaviour observed during a match held on Thursday, April 16. The club released a statement asking for privacy as he continues to receive care.

"While the Club acknowledges the public's interest, it again asks that the privacy of Elijah and his family be respected," the statement read. It also urged media outlets not to speculate about his condition or whereabouts, stressing the importance of confidentiality during his recovery.

According to ESPN, the 23 year old had already been ruled out of traveling with the team to Perth days before the match due to what was described as a mental health episode. Despite this, reports indicate he remained eager to play.

Carlton chief executive Graham Wright told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that staff were aware Hollands was struggling during the game against Collingwood. He said club officials were actively trying to support him throughout the match.

"Our guys were dealing with him in the game and obviously knew that he was having some problems," Wright said.

Following the incident, the club said it is reviewing the circumstances leading up to the match, including events from the previous weeks. Wright described the situation as complex and said the organization is treating it with seriousness while prioritizing Hollands' wellbeing.

"Thursday night presented unprecedented and complex circumstances," he said. "Our primary focus remains on caring for Elijah, making sure he continues to receive the medical and wellbeing support he needs."

Reports also indicate that Hollands has been receiving ongoing support from club staff both on and off the field. Wright added that the club has worked closely with him over an extended period to ensure his welfare remains a priority.

This is not the first time Hollands has taken time away for mental health reasons. He reportedly took personal leave twice last year and later spoke publicly about struggles with mental health and alcohol use.

Carlton coach Michael Voss described Hollands as "pretty shattered" following the match, noting that the player felt disappointed with his performance and emotional about the outcome.
